It’s scary for both Mommy and child when we send our little ones off to school for the first time. Also frightening is sending them to a new school, or camp…or anywhere really! My little girl started Pre-K this year which was both exciting a scary for us. She would say, “I’m really excited but a little bit nervous.” Because we both were feeling “a little bit nervous” we decided to make these DIY Mommy and Me Friendship Bracelets.
My little girl’s bracelet serves as a reminder to her that I am thinking of her. And, she feels close to me while wearing it. My bracelet not only helps me feel close to her as well but serves as a reminder to me to pray for her throughout the day, thanking God for keeping her safe, comforting her, and helping her to make friends. It’s also is a reminder to pray for her teachers.
You can watch our tutorial video HERE for step by step instructions…or for entertainment. It’s very interesting making a video with a 4-year-old!
– Embroidery thread, 4 colors. (We went with Mila’s school colors because they are strict about wearing those colors)
– Jar or small container used for tracing a circle
– Lightweight cardboard (We used an old file folder)
– Decorative Button
Cut string to about 35 inches, or longer if you want to wrap the bracelet around the wrist twice.
Using your jar, trace a circle to your cardboard, which you will cut out.
Poke a hole in the center of the circle.
Cut 8 slots, ¼ – ½ inch, evenly around the circle.
Fold string in half and tie a loop which will serve as a hook for your button.
You will now have 8 strands of string, however you only need 7, so cut one strand off close to the knot of the loop.
Push the loop and knot through the center of the circle.
Randomly hook each color of thread through slots on the circle, leaving one slot without string.
Take the third string to the right of the empty slot and put it in the empty slot. Turn your circle and repeat, taking the third string to the right of the empty slot and put it in the empty slot. Continue to do this until the bracelet is the desired length.
Tie a knot in end of completed bracelet.
Take strand of string (color of your choice) and thread it through the button then tie strings together to keep button in place.
Trim strings, and ta da you’re done!
I really hope you found this tutorial helpful and inspiring. If you and your child decide to make your own DIY Mommy and Me Friendship Bracelets Mila and I would LOVE to see them!
